By Brandon Alter:
I had a healer in Chile tell me that my shoulders were way too rounded for someone my age. She asked me why I was hiding my heart. She said the strongest position for the heart is not when it is protected but when it is shining fully.
When your chest is out, exposed, THAT IS WHEN YOUR HEART IS THE STRONGEST.
So yes, I could go to therapy and I could explore all the reasons why I am hiding my heart. But I could also bypass all that mental gymnastics and just work directly with the ancient oracle of my body; by learning how to roll my shoulders back; by just changing the physical symbol of my body, I can change everything.
I think there’s a misconception that to lead a spiritual life means to deny the body, but the truth is if we weren’t supposed to have a body, we wouldn’t have one. The body is not beside the point, the body is the point. It’s the gateway to your heart and your mind and your spirit. Believe it or not, you chose your body. Before you were born, you picked the exact physical form you now inhabit. And you picked this body for a reason: to remind you of your true nature and the work you have to do in the world.
Your body is a symbol, and it tells the truth about who you are. But that doesn’t mean we can’t change our bodies. When I teach Yoga or Pilates, I am constantly trying to get my students to consider what stories their bodies are telling. For example, when your hips aren’t square, it tells the story of always being a little behind yourself or ahead of yourself. People with too many overdeveloped muscles are a symbol of over-protection, literal armor that keeps people from seeing the truth of their being. When we change the symbol of our bodies, we change the story. When the body is out of alignment, it calls in the reflections of your own misaligned vibrations.
Consider what stories your body is telling today. What stories are outdated and ready to be retold and remodeled through your physical form?
