Flapper Press is proud to announce our nominations for the annual Pushcart Prize in writing!

We thought we'd start out this crazy year by honoring the outstanding prose writing that published on Flapper Press in 2024. As always, we find it a challenge to choose just three nominees, and we are incredibly grateful to all the artists, poets, and writers who submitted their work to the site.

The Pushcart Prize Anthology is published by Pushcart Press and honors the best in American "poetry, short fiction, essays or literary whatnot" published in small presses over the previous year. The endowment for the award comes from The Pushcart Prize Fellowships Inc.a 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation. Although the award has no monetary prizes, an anthology of the selected works are published annually to feature the winners.

Small-press editors nominate up to six pieces (6 poems or essays, or a combination of the two) in any genre from work that appeared in their pages over the past year. A panel of judges compiled from previous Pushcart Prize winners and editors select the winners.

This year, Flapper Press nominated three works in short fiction and essays, along with three poems.

Congratulations to our nominees, and thank you to all the writers who shared their work with us this year at Flapper Press!

Meet our Pushcart Prize nominees in writing for 2024!

Yvonne Osborne

Published in early December 2024, Yvonne Osborne's poetic short story calls out to memory and tales told about dark events. Reminiscing about a night when tragedy struck so suddenly compels the writer to declaim:

"Today, I want to be irresponsible and rebel against the expectations that others have of me. I want to drive down a country road with the windows open, or jump a train, or learn to sail. I want to make a story."

Anne Trominski

Flapper Press was honored to welcome producer Anne Trominski and her cohorts, Mack and Steve, from the Civics on the Rocks podcast to discuss American history, current events, and what it means to be a citizen of the United States. "What Is Civics?" is the first installment in a series of podcast transcriptions that share the hard truths about the world of American politics, along with a few laughs . . . and a few cocktails.

Elizabeth Gracen

Published on October 22, 2024, this article takes a critical look at some of the more dastardly tactics employed by the Trump campaign to spread fear and discrimination during the 2024 election cycle. Targeting the Trans community, the campaign's misleading tactics to further alienate Trans people swept across the Midwest, pummeling the airwaves with lies and discriminatory rhetoric.

"To see the trans community being used as political tools by a callous, truth-challenged campaign during football games and beyond is pathetic. It is simply an attempt to sew fear and further seed dangerous propaganda that has a real impact on the lives and freedoms of not just the trans community but all Americans."

Flapper Press is always open to new content that provides a unique voice or perspective.
