By Flapper Press Poetry Café:
The Flapper Press Poetry Café continues to support poets from around the globe and takes great pride in featuring their new work. We've decided to expand our concept of "My Favorite Lines of Poetry" to include original work from our poetic contributors.
Please consider sending us your favorite lines to feature on our site!
This week, we highlight the work of poet Hiram Larew.
Appearing in recent issues of Poetry South, Door Is a Jar, Honest Ulsterman and Contemporary American Voices, Hiram Larew's poetry is also found in his six collections. And, he launched Poetry X Hunger as a way "to turn poetry into food."
Larew's newest collection of poems, Patchy Ways, has been published by CyberWit Press.
Why Hiram chose these lines:
"There's something about all the gathers breathing that causes me to grin. Hopefully, it's a line that welcomes the reader with surprise."
Hats or Trees
We are alive my love
and there is your chin
Or porch lights turned on
and your grin as far as fields
or trains can see
What more than this
can ever be
my love --
This over-hum of time
that through whatever ways
will become
In dusk the breeze
of hats or trees my love
This just right here this now my love
and what’s to come
and we’re alive
And so my love
these ohs that blend –
how mornings glow
or evenings hum
as all the gathers breathe
Why might readers enjoy the book?
Many of the poems in Patchy Ways wink at the reader—as a first signal of hoped-for friendship.
